TRUCKEE TAHOE YOUTH CHORUS
Children who love to sing may join the Truckee Tahoe Youth Chorus! The director for the Youth Chorus is Susan Horst, and accompanist is Sandie Davis from the Truckee Tahoe Community Chorus. Our Youth Chorus Liason is Courtney Simson. The Youth chorus joins the Truckee adult chorus for holiday songs every Christmas at the Resort at Squaw Creek.
The Truckee Tahoe Youth Chorus was started in 2012 with a collaboration between drama instructor Courtney Simson and conductor Susan Horst. Courtney was producing a holiday revue with children entitled "It's Christmas", which featured a musical revue called "Around the World at Christmas Time". Susan and Courtney discussed the possibilily of of including the children in the TTCC Christmas concert. Susan then attended some meetings of the class to work with the children on a song that they might perform as a special number at the regular adult holiday concert. Twenty-seven children participated in this first event.
In 2013, Courtney and Susan created a class called "Musical Theater Workshop" through the Truckee Recreation and Parks Department. From the start, the class was designed to give children experience in both drama and music. Susan taught a wide variety of holiday songs to the kids, from the beautiful and moving "God Bless Us, Everyone", which they sung with the adult Chorus, to some tunes well suited to young voices, which they performed alone. The Chorus was pleased to spotlight fifty-six children in their Christmas show that year.
In the spring of 2014, the Youth Chorus expanded to seventy-four children in a special Preshow performance of choral numbers from "The Lion King" and "Grease", presented every evening before main stage performances of "Oklahoma".
TTCC is pleased to once again feature children in our upcoming holiday concert on December 13th and 14th at the Resort at Squaw Creek, and looking forward to offering the children performance opportunities through the Recreation and Parks Department in the 2015 spring Preshow choral medleys: "The Sound of Music" for K-2nd grade, "Mary Poppins" for 3rd-5th grade, and "Footloose" for 6th -12th grade.
