The Truckee Tahoe Youth Chorus was started in 2012 with a collaboration between drama instructor Courtney Simson and conductor Susan Horst. Courtney was producing a holiday revue with children entitled "It's Christmas", which featured a musical revue called "Around the World at Christmas Time". Susan and Courtney discussed the possibility of of including the children in the TTCC Christmas concert. Susan then attended some meetings of the class to work with the children on a song that they might perform as a special number at the regular adult holiday concert. Twenty-seven children participated in this first event.
In 2013, Courtney and Susan created a class called "Musical Theater Workshop" through the Truckee Recreation and Parks Department. From the start, the class was designed to give children experience in both drama and music. Susan taught a wide variety of holiday songs to the kids, from the beautiful and moving "God Bless Us, Everyone", which they sung with the adult Chorus, to some tunes well suited to young voices, which they performed alone. The Chorus was pleased to spotlight fifty-six children in their Christmas show that year.
In the spring of 2014, the Youth Chorus expanded to seventy-four children in a special Preshow performance of choral numbers from "The Lion King" and "Grease", presented every evening before main stage performances of "Oklahoma".
